There will always be data that stats can't explain

"Every rating is a projection, and when there's less of a sample size then it's going be more difficult to pinpoint those projections," said Stauffer. "Even general manager and coaches are unable to determine who the best player to take is, when it comes to the selection process."

In the end, because of COVID-19, the evaluation process has become more complicated than what was expected. Important scouting events for scouting like the NCAA March Madness Tournament and those scrimmages in the NBA draft combine. The two events this year were postponed.

Stauffer explained that ratings are mostly based upon statistics from college or abroad. He explained that, just like front office staff, the developers look at plenty of games on television and study in-depth breakdowns so that they can make their calculations as exact as they can. To assess strengths and weaknesses, developers could look at the field goal percent for every zone. Additionally, defensive metrics, such as steals, blocks and blocks are a good indicator of defensive strength.

After everything is done, it is acknowledged that the approach might have flaws evident. There will always be data that stats can't explain, regardless of whether defensive strategies are at play. Stauffer suggests that every player should have a foundation for ranking their teams based on a formula.

Stauffer explained "We are working to ensure that the ratings are as accurate as possible without having the complete picture like we usually do." "We want to give the ratings the best possible precision, without having the entire view as we usually do."
